When you’re juggling grown kids, grandkids and aging parents all at once, it’s hard to find an outing that works for everyone.
Dad can’t do the steep trails anymore. The grandkids need somewhere to run. Mom just wants to sit somewhere pretty and talk. And you’d love a place where nobody has to sit in the car for an hour.
In Walnut Creek, my answer is almost always Heather Farm Park.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Heather Farm Park, at 301 North San Carlos Drive, is a city park of more than 100 acres that opened in 1970. It has paved paths around a pond, the free-to-visit Gardens at Heather Farm, an all-abilities playground, an off-leash dog park, the Clarke Memorial Swim Center and the Walnut Creek Tennis Center. Flat walking paths make it one of the easiest places in town to enjoy the outdoors with an older parent.

Why It Works for Every Generation
For Mom and Dad. The paved paths around the pond are mostly flat, with benches along the way, so it’s easy to take a slow loop and stop to watch the ducks.
For the grandkids. The all-abilities playground is a big favorite, and kids love sliding down the turf-covered hills on pieces of cardboard.
For you. You get fresh air, a little exercise and real time together, without a long drive.
The Gardens at Heather Farm
This is my favorite corner of the park. The Gardens at Heather Farm, at 1540 Marchbanks Drive, are run by a nonprofit and are generally free to visit. They include themed garden areas, quiet benches and plenty of inspiration if you’re thinking about what kind of yard you want in your next home.
More to Do at the Park
Clarke Memorial Swim Center at 1750 Heather Drive offers lap swim and water exercise classes for adults, which can be gentle on the joints.
The Walnut Creek Tennis Center has 11 tennis courts and 2 pickleball courts, with lessons available.
The off-leash dog park has separate areas for bigger and smaller dogs.
The fishing pond and walking paths connect toward the Contra Costa Canal Trail and the Iron Horse Trail if you want to go farther.

A Gentle Way to Check In
Here’s something I share with families: a relaxed outing is often when you learn the most about how a parent is really doing. You notice whether walking feels harder, whether they tire quickly, or whether they mention things they’ve stopped doing.
You don’t need to turn the visit into an evaluation. Just pay attention, enjoy the time, and if something worries you, have the conversation later when it’s calm.
For Homeowners Near the Park
Living close to Heather Farm is a real lifestyle perk, and buyers notice it. If you’re selling nearby, it’s worth showing how easy it is to walk or bike to the park.
“Thank you for sharing your expertise and sound advice with me! When aging parents pass away, the grief alone can be paralyzing, and the task of selling a family home in another county is incredibly daunting.
I didn’t know how to choose a realtor or what questions to ask, but you patiently guided me through the process. The outline and interview questions you provided were invaluable. I truly appreciate your attention to detail and your compassion, both of which were instrumental during such an overwhelming time.”
Final Thoughts
The best family outings aren’t the fancy ones. They’re the easy afternoons where everyone can come, nobody’s rushed, and there’s time to really talk.
Heather Farm gives you that, right here in Walnut Creek.
