Walnut Creek, CA: A Local's Guide for Your Next Chapter

Lion fountain at Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek, California

Walnut Creek is the hub of the East Bay. Walkable, lively, and surrounded by open space.

It's where people come when they want dinner downtown, a hike on Mount Diablo, and BART into the city, all from the same zip code.

I live and work in this corridor. Here's what I'd tell a friend.

Why people love it here

  • A real downtown. Broadway Plaza, local restaurants, the Lesher Center for the Arts. You can actually park the car and walk.
  • Open space everywhere. Shell Ridge, Lime Ridge, Heather Farm Park and the Iron Horse Trail.
  • Easy commute. Two BART stations plus quick access to 680 and 24.
  • Room to rightsize. Single-story homes, condos near downtown, and Rossmoor for active adults 55+.

Neighborhoods worth knowing

Northgate. Established homes, bigger lots, and a lot of long-time owners starting to think about what's next.

Saranap. A quiet pocket between Walnut Creek and Lafayette that a lot of people drive right past.

Rossmoor. A gated 55+ community with golf, pools, clubs, and a social calendar that puts most of us to shame.

Downtown condos. Lock-and-leave living for people who are done with yard work and want to walk to dinner.

If you're downsizing or rightsizing here

This is where I spend most of my time. Moving out of a home you've loved for 20 or 30 years is a lot. It's emotional, it's logistical, and it rarely happens on a perfect timeline.

My job is to make it feel doable. We figure out your timing, your next home, and your sale. Then we take it one step at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Walnut Creek a good place to retire?

For a lot of people, yes. It's walkable, has great healthcare nearby, and offers options from Rossmoor to single-story homes to downtown condos.

What's the difference between Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill?

Walnut Creek is the hub, with more dining, shopping and nightlife, and usually higher prices. Pleasant Hill is a step down in price, a little quieter, and still close to everything.

Can I buy in Walnut Creek and sell my current home at the same time?

Yes, with a plan. Timing and terms matter more than luck. I wrote a whole guide on how to buy and sell at the same time.
