Lafayette, CA: A Local's Guide for Your Next Chapter

Shops and outdoor cafe tables in downtown Lafayette, California, on a sunny fall day

Lafayette feels like a small town that happens to sit 25 minutes from San Francisco. Oak-covered hills, a sweet downtown, and a reservoir everyone treats like their backyard.

It's one of the most sought-after towns in the East Bay. And it has some quirks worth knowing before you fall in love.

Why people love it here

  • The Lafayette Reservoir. The loop walk is basically the town square.
  • Walkable downtown. Restaurants, coffee, and the library along Mt. Diablo Blvd.
  • Commute. Lafayette BART plus Highway 24 straight through the tunnel.
  • Schools. A big draw for families, and a big reason homes hold their value.

Neighborhoods worth knowing

Downtown / Trail neighborhood. Walk to BART, dinner and coffee. Great if you want less car time.

Burton Valley. Classic family area near the schools, with flatter streets than most of town.

Happy Valley. Larger lots, privacy, and more of an estate feel.

Reliez Valley. North side, more space, quieter pace.

If you're downsizing here

Here's the Lafayette nuance nobody tells you. A lot of homes sit on hillsides, with stairs, sloped driveways and multi-level layouts. Beautiful at 45. Harder at 75.

So a lot of my Lafayette clients are deciding whether to find a single-level home here or rightsize nearby in Walnut Creek or Rossmoor. There's no wrong answer. We just map it out together.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lafayette good for retirees?

It can be. Look for single-level homes or downtown condos near BART and shops. Hillside homes can get harder to manage over time.

Lafayette or Walnut Creek?

Lafayette is quieter and more small-town, and usually pricier. Walnut Creek has more dining, shopping, and senior-friendly options like Rossmoor.
